Cute and seemingly cuddly they may be, but once possums decide your roof void is home, cute no longer seems an appropriate description.

  • Possums are native animals and are a fully protected species
  • Current laws prevent possum removal from the area they currently reside .
  • They can be humanely trapped, held until repairs are affected to prevent their re-entry into your roof and then released within 50 metres of the point they were initially trapped.

A repellent brew made from boiling water and Quassia chips (Quassia ameria)  can be applied to individual trees or shrubs for temporary protection against the Brushtail and other possums. Allowed to cool, it is applied to the bark or foliage. It is extremely bitter.
It should be remembered that repellents give only short-term protection and give no protection to new growth. Repellents seldom work on plants that are very attractive to animals.

Possum Houses

Given the choice, the Brushtail possum will make its den in naturally occurring tree hollows. In urban areas, there are few tree hollows remaining due to clearing, so they adopt the space in roofs for daytime shelter.
Few homeowners can tolerate a possum living in their roof for too long and usually take steps to remove the possum and effect repairs to prevent re-entry.
Simply evicting the possum/s will work, however the problem of housing still remains. Males do not fare very well journeying into foreign territory, fights often occur and terrible injuries are often suffered.

If you have a suitable tree or willing to install a post, at least 4 metres high; a possum house can be the ideal solution.
